Researchers Find Novel Rhombic Ice Phase Formation from Aqueous Salt Solutions

Two dimensional ice has been confirmed to play a ubiquitous role in many physical processes like surface wetting, antifreezing, adhesion, friction, etc. Though many work has been done on investigating two-dimensional ice on various solid surfaces, the geometry and thermodynamics of ice formation in salt solutions at the solid-liquid interface are still less understood, due to the complex interactions between salt ions, water molecules, and solid surfaces.

Novel discovery on Al(III) Doping of ε-Fe₂O₃ in the Ancient High-iron Black-brown Glaze

Based on siliceous clay and calcareous wood ash, the world’s first high-fired glazes were made in China, the technology of which was at its zenith by the Song Dynasty (960-1279) including blackware glazes with single-phase, micron-scale ε-Fe2O3 films identified on their surfaces. However, modern synthetic methods are still difficult to synthesize and reproduce the effects on a larger scale without other iron oxide polymorph impurities.

A Novel Approach for Generating Coherent and Ultrashort Soft X-ray Pulses

Generation of intense, tunable, and fully coherent pulses in the X-ray regime has been a long-standing challenge for laser technologies. The urgent need for intense X-ray light sources has prompted the development of X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). However, most of the presently existing X-ray FEL facilities are faced with limited temporal coherence and large shot-to-shot fluctuations.

New beamlines in trial operation at SSRF

In December 27, four beamlines at the Phase-II project at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) passed the process test and stared the trail operation, which signified that a total of 11 beamlines and 20 experimental stations have been constructed and put in operation at SSRF.

In 2021, breakthroughs have been made continuously for debugging of Shanghai soft X-ray free electron laser, and has pushed the shortest wavelength of free electron laser of China to 2nm, and firstly realized full band coverage of the "water window" among the 3 soft X-ray free electron laser facilities around the world.
