The BL17UM beamline at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) is a synchrotron radiation beamline equipped with the capability to determine the structures of protein crystals at the micron scale, particularly challenging crystal structures such as membrane proteins. Additionally, BL17UM is capable of efficiently and with low damage resolving conventional protein crystals and small molecule material crystals.
To achieve stable small-sized beams with high flux density, BL17UM is equipped with multilayer monochromators and double crystal monochromators, enabling the X-ray energy range to extend from 5 to 25 keV. The beam size can be adjusted within the range of 1 to 20 μm, with a maximum photon flux exceeding 1.6×1012 phs/s when the beam size is focused to 1×1μm2 at the sample point, reaching an advanced level among similar international beamlines.
The overall layout strategy of the beamline adopts a two-stage focusing scheme of pre-focusing and micron focusing; key optical components of the beamline are vertically arranged to minimize the influence of vibration on the beam position.
